Decide what you want from social media before opening the app, then choose when and where to use it. A timed check-in can preserve messages and communities you care about without letting every spare moment become a feed session.
Name the useful part
You might use social media to see a friend’s photos, post your work, or message a group. Write down those purposes. This makes it easier to recognize when you have moved from a useful task into open-ended browsing.
You do not have to delete an account to change how you use it.
Choose a check-in window
Pick a time and place for checking the app. Avoid making the rule so strict that you abandon it by the next day. A short check-in after lunch may work better than a blanket ban.
When you open the app, do the thing you came for first. If you choose to browse, choose an end point before you start.
Make the automatic path less smooth
Move the app away from the first Home Screen and silence notifications that simply invite you back. If that is not enough, add a physical step. Unplug Me unlocks distracting apps when you connect your charger and start a timed session, then blocks them when you unplug or the timer ends.
Put the charger somewhere that fits intentional use. A charger beside your pillow will create a different habit from one at a desk.
Keep social connection outside the feed
For people you care about, consider a direct message, call, or plan to meet. Social apps can help you connect; the goal is to make that connection the point of opening them.
If you are trying to change a long-running habit, start with one app and one situation. Review what actually changed after a week.
